New study links breast cancer and alcohol consumption

Thursday, March 15, 2007

We've all heard of the health benefits of moderate drinking but a new study raises new concerns. It found that drinking a single alcoholic beverage daily may increase a woman's risk of developing invasive breast cancer by 9 percent.

Drinking just over two drinks daily may increase the risk by 32 percent. Beer, liquor and white wine all resulted in an increase, but not red wine. That's according to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers followed almost 40,000 women participating in the women's health study. Alcohol is thought to affect breast cancer risk by influencing estrogen levels.
