August 6, 2007 (WLS) -- The University of Illinois at Chicago has been awarded more than $9.5 million to establish an Autism Center of Excellence.
The five-year grant is coming from the National Institute of Health and will make UIC one of five funded centers in the U.S. and the only Midwest site.
Autism spectrum disorders affect about one in 160 people in the United States.
The UIC center will focus on many autism issues and will investigate the underlying causes of and potential treatments for repetitive behavior, a common problem related to autism.
