Test tells mole from melanoma

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Researchers have developed a new test that can better tell the difference between harmless moles and the aggressive skin cancer melanoma.

The test uses a special dye that attaches to proteins that are more abundant in melanomas. That gives researchers better visual clues for a diagnosis.

The new test succeeded at correcting misdiagnosed cases of melanoma 75 percent of the time.

The researchers say treatments for melanoma are only effective when it's detected early.
