Study: Inherited genes can be overridden

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

If you're born with genes that predispose you to high blood pressure, does that mean you're doomed to have it? Most people would say yes, but a new study finds your lifestyle could override everything.

It's been known for years that blood pressure is affected by genes. It's also known lifestyle affects blood pressure. This study shows that they interact and that the effects of those genes vary among individuals who have different behaviors.

Scientists say it's an important finding because high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. They say their study in the journal Circulation reinforces the message that lifestyle changes can alter the effect of genetics.
