Study: Non-pill contraceptives may be linked to blood clots

May 11, 2012 (WLS) -- Certain birth control pills have been linked to blood clots. Now, new research shows non-pill contraceptives may also be linked to blood clots.

The report says women using hormone-releasing skin patches, implants, and vaginal rings were at an even higher risk of developing serious blood clots.

Researchers say to reduce the risk women should consider switching to the pill which has a lower risk.

However, hormone releasing intrauterine devices or IUDs do not increase the risk of venous thrombosis.

Researchers reporting in BMJ say women should be informed about these risks in order to be able to choose the most appropriate hormonal contraceptive products.
