August 27, 2012 (NEW YORK) (WLS) -- Teenagers with weight issues may need to be on the lookout for gallstones.
A study in the journal Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition shows teens who were overweight were twice as likely as those with a healthy weight to have gallstones.
The rate was higher among those who were obese.
An obesity expert says this is yet another sign that obesity-linked disorders are being seen at increasingly young ages.
Gallstones are small stones, usually made of cholesterol, that form in the gallbladder.
Gallstone disease has also been linked to increased weight in adults.
