Tanning beds linked to non-melanoma skin cancer in new report

  

October 3, 2012 (WLS) -- A new study finds indoor tanning significantly increases a person's risk for non-melanoma skin cancer, especially if they are younger.

Researchers say at least 170,000 cases of these types of skin cancer can be linked to tanning beds every year.

The British Medical Journal report finds those who use indoor tanning are 67 percent more likely to develop what's known as squamous-cell and basal cell carcinoma.

The risk was highest for people who started using indoor tanning before the age of 25.

Researchers stress, while non-melanoma skin cancers are less deadly, their impact on health is enormous.
