February 5, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- High wind, bone chilling temperatures and dry indoor heat the perfect recipe for miserable skin.
The hot showers and baths many people turn to could be making matters worse.
It is not always good for your skin because the hotter the water is, the more it will take away the natural oils and moisturizers in your skin.
Instead Northwestern Medicine dermatologist Bethanee Schlosser said to limit a warm bath or shower to 10 minutes or less.
It may not be enough to just put on more moisturizer; it may be time to make a change.
The facial lotion that does so well in spring and summer may not be up for the job during the winter.
Consider switching to creams that are oil-based.
They tend do a better job keeping moisture in.
"Just because it's a cream does not mean it's going to clog your pores and cause acne," Schlosser said. "There are a lot of formulations out there over the counter that for the face that are non-comedogenic which means they are not going to clog your pores or cause acne."
Some final tips from the experts, plug in or install a household humidifier to help keep skin hydrated.
Use a mild fragrance-free soap that moisturizers as it cleanses and drink plenty of water.
