March 19, 2013 (WLS) -- Mammograms can detect breast cancer early and save lives. But they can also lead to false alarms, which take a heavy psychological toll.
A Danish study of more than 1,300 women found those who received false positive results on their mammograms reported symptoms of anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, which still lingered three years later. Their psychological well-being more closely matched that of breast cancer patients than healthy women.
The study is published in the journal Annals of Family Medicine.
