The new bacteria that the surgery introduces into the gut may be just as important at keeping obesity away.

The microbes appear to raise metabolism while extracting fewer calories from food. When researchers transferred this type of bacteria into obese mice, they lost weight without surgery.

The study is published in the online edition of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
