FDA proposes rules to boost imported food safety

  

July 26, 2013 (WLS) -- The Food and Drug Administration is proposing rules to try to improve the safety of imported foods.

It is part of the Food Safety and Modernization Act, which was passed in 2010.

Importers would be accountable for the safety of imported foods.

There would be a process for approving those groups that inspect and audit food production in other countries.

Less than 2 percent of food that is imported to the U.S. is ever inspected.

The hope is that this will help to ensure that the food that reaches our shores is safer.
