Flow restictors on medicine bottles could prevent childhood poisonings
Friday, July 26, 2013
July 26, 2013 (WLS) -- A simple device could prevent cases of childhood poisoning, but many companies don't use it because they're not required to.
Researchers at Emory University watched as 110 toddlers were given uncapped or improperly-closed medication bottles.
Some had flow restrictors that released only a little liquid at a time.
Some did not.
Within two minutes, 85 percent of the regular bottles were empty.
But in that amount of time, children could not empty any of the containers with flow restrictors, giving parents more time to respond.
