Choking study: More than12,000 kids treated for choking each year

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Choking is a leading cause of injury in children, especially those 4 years old and younger, according to a new study in the journal Pediatrics.

Researchers looked at thousands of children who had emergency room visits because of non-fatal, food-related choking between 2001 to 2009.

They found that an average of more than 12,000 children under the age of 15 were treated for food-related choking each year.

That's about 34 children every day.

Items that caused the most problems were hard candy, bones and meats.
