October 8, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Many people have added weight loss apps to their smartphones. But do the apps really help?
Researchers at the University of Massachusetts tested 30 popular weight loss apps. The results were mixed.
Many of the weight loss apps effectively tracked calorie consumption, but the researchers noted they did not address irregular meals, stress eating or other common reasons people overeat.
The study's authors say adding behavioral advice to the apps might help turn smart phones into reliable diet coaches.
