New research finds a supplement taking by millions of Americans to prevent brittle bone disease doesn't seem to work.

Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year on Vitamin D.

Researchers in New Zealand poured over more than 20 existing studies.

They found higher levels of the vitamin did little to make bones stronger and prevent osteoporosis.

The research is published in the medical journal Lancet.
