Intelligence Report: Feds want ex-Bears WR Sam Hurd in jail until drug trial
August 20, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- In this Intelligence Report: The widening criminal problems for ex-Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd. Federal authorities want to revoke Hurd's bond and keep him in jail until his drug trial.
As the NFL rolls toward its 2012-13 opener, Sam Hurd will be a captive audience for the entire season if federal prosecutors have their way. Newly obtained court records in Dallas, Texas, reveal that the government wants the ex-Bears player locked up without bond after his re-arrest this month in a widening drug conspiracy case.
A year ago, Sam Hurd was locked in a battle for a Bears roster spot. Now, Hurd is locked up in Dallas, and federal prosecutors have filed a motion that he be kept behind bars until his trials, likely to be months away.
Hurd was initially arrested last December outside a restaurant in northwest suburban Rosement. According to the FBI, over steak dinners, Hurd and two men he thought were drug suppliers had just consummated a deal to import multiple kilos of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week. His dinnermates were working for the FBI.
Hurd was released on $100,000 bond. According to newly filed court records, the former NFL wide receiver violated the terms of his bond in June and July when he was implicated in additional cocaine deals and failed two successive urine tests for marijuana.
Hurd was arrested 10 days ago outside a YMCA in San Antonio where he used to run a popular youth football camp.
U.S. prosecutors will be at federal court in dallas a week from Tuesday asking that Hurd's pre-trial release be revoked.
Hurd's attorney says all of the new allegations are false and they are expected to oppose the government's motion to keep Hurd locked up.
