There's a pretrial hearing in Chicago for a lieutenant in one of Mexico's most powerful drug cartels.

Thursday's hearing comes amid uncertainty about just when Vincente Zambada's trafficking trial might start.

When it begins, it's expected to offer a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the Sinaloa cartel and U.S. efforts to thwart Mexican traffickers.

Judge Ruben Castillo (KAS'-tee-yoh) has previously delayed fixing a trial date, citing the case's complexity.

The Sinaloa cartel is run by Zambada's father, Ismael Zambada, and Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. They're named in the same indictment as the younger Zambada, but remain at large in Mexico.

They're accused of using boats, submarines and even a cargo plane to move drugs from South America to Mexico, then on to the U.S.
