December 21, 2005 -- Investigators hope an autopsy will explain how a Massachusetts businessman died. The body of 31-year-old Matthew Soumakis was pulled from the Chicago River Tuesday morning.
Matthew Soumakis, 31, of East Longmeadow, Mass., had been reported missing by his family after he disappeared Dec. 6 while in town for a conference.
"We think it is Matthew Soumakis," Sgt. Eugene Mullins said, although he said investigators were awaiting autopsy results to confirm the identity and determine whether foul play was involved. They are planning to conduct the autopsy Wednesday.
Police said the last person to have seen a person resembling Soumakis was a bartender at an Irish pub along the river and near the hotel where Soumakis was staying. His mother last spoke with him by phone on Dec. 5, police said.
Family members recently traveled to Chicago to look for Soumakis and distribute fliers bearing the man's photo. Soumakis, a manager with financial software firm SS&C Technologies Inc., was married in February, and he and his wife are expecting their first child, the Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site Tuesday.
