September 1, 2006 (Last Updated: 4:24:55 PM) (WLS) -- Millions of Americans will take to the road this Labor Day weekend. With gas prices falling, more and more drivers have decided it's a good time to fill up and go.
According to Triple A, more people are driving over the holiday weekend than last year. The average price of a gallon of gas in Illinois is $2.99. that's down from last month. Even with the drop, drivers said it's not enough.
"Round trip is about 500 miles," said Richard Johnson, driving to Iowa City, who didn't even notice the price drop. "Have to go a long way."
"they're better than they were, but still too high. In Tennessee, they're $2.39 where I'm from, so it was a shock," said Dennis Woolverton, drove from Tennessee.
"I'm going to eat and go home. I'm not going to smile at all," said Joseph Taylor, driving to St. Paul.
About 29.6 million people will hit the highways this year, according to Triple A. Meanwhile, fewer people are flying to their destinations this year.
About 270,000 passengers will pass through O'Hare International Airport and 75,000 people will travel through Midway Airport.
