November 8, 2006 (WLS) -- A five-year-old girl was killed when a vehicle crashed into her home Tuesday night on the city's West Side. Makayla Parker was pinned under the sports utility vehicle.
The family was getting ready for bed when the vehicle lost control and drove right through the front wall of the home, destroying most of the ground floor. Both parents escaped serious injury, but their young daughter -- who had just started kindergarten -- didn't survive.
"We were getting ready to go to bed and then came the truck and crushed my baby," said Unika Parker, Father.
The little girl was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Her parents were also taken to the hospital where they were treated and released.
The SUV had been reported stolen before the accident. Police say it was speeding down the alley across the street just before it crashed into the house. A witness says it was being chased by another vehicle that rammed it in the back -- possibly explaining the damage to the rear of the truck.
"The guy who was chasing the truck, he tried to turn, he tried to make the right turn, and he basically ran out of room," said Corey Vance, Witness.
Family members say they have no idea who was behind the wheel.
"We don't know nothing, we don't know nothing. All we know is that Makayla is gone," said Tammy Parker, Aunt
"This is ridiculous, you can't even be safe in your own home. My baby has to die by something like this, it's not right," said Unika Parker.
The driver of the SUV is in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Police say he is in his 40s, but they have not released his name. They are still trying to determine whether he was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Police say the vehicle was reported stolen, and they say there are no reports that the crash involved a police chase.
