NOW pulls endorsement of 2nd Ward candidate

April 2, 2007 (WLS) -- A women's organization is pulling its endorsement for 2nd Ward aldermanic candidate Bob Fioretti for a second time.

The Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women says he misled them regarding a relationship with a woman who filed an order of protection against him in 2003.

Fioretti claimed the woman, a court reporter, began harassing him in courtrooms where he worked. But the Chicago Tribune found that he filed to get the protection order lifted and that the document stated he and the woman had a "past relationship." Fioretti's campaign emphasized Monday that the woman is Fioretti's significant other and was his girlfriend at the time of the claim. The woman was a part of the claim.

NOW pulled its endorsement from Fioretti days before the election in February after learning about the order of protection. But the group re-endorsed him after a judge vacated the order saying the allegations had no basis in fact.

Fioretti is challenging Alderman Madeline Haithcock in the April 17 runoff election.

A longtime friend of Fioretti released a statement on his behalf Monday evening saying she is disappointed NOW would call into question Fioretti's integrity and support of women's organizations.
