Divorce attorney's racy billboard disappears

Wednesday, May 09, 2007

A Rush Street billboard that said "Life's short. Get a divorce" was supposed to be up for another month, but it was taken down Tuesday.

A woman in the closest thing possible to a wardrobe malfunction and a hunky guy bookend the words "Life's short. Get a divorce." on the ad, which came down Tuesday afternoon.

The ad for lawyers Corri Fetman and Kelly Garland drew scores of complaints from neighbors and other attorneys who said its content reflected poorly on their profession.

City officials said their decision to jettison the sign had nothing to do with the tan and sculpted torsos or the salacious message sandwiched between them.

"I called the building inspector and told him to do his job and he did," said Alderman Burton Natarus. "It has nothing to do with content or anything else. They did not have a permit and they were ordered to take it down."

Fetman and Garland say they're upset the sign was removed from the posh Gold Coast neighborhood.

"I am incensed that someone could just go ahead, without notice, without due process, take down our billboard," said Fetman, sign sponsor.

"We own that art. I feel violated."

Attorney Fetman chose her market well. The sign loomed over the Rush Street club scene.

"It's called the Viagra Triangle. A lot of young girls looking for wealthy older men, and vice versa," said Amanda Turek.

"We come from families where instead of going for the easy fix of divorce you work it out," said Jill Strong.

"I don't agree with divorce but I think it is probably one of the funniest billboards I've ever seen," said Rachel Matthis.

"As someone said, marriage is hard enough without having a billboard like that around," said Stephanie Lynch.

"Great advertising is controversial. It provokes thought," Fetman said.

Attorney Fetman says some people didn't like the sign but her calls from people booking appointments in her office have gone up dramatically.

Alderman Burt Natarus told ABC7 late Tuesday the sign was taken down because of a permit issue.
