Mayor Daley is calling on lawmakers in Springfield to approve more funding for Chicago Public Schools.

He spoke Wednesday during a visit to Hanson Elementary School on the West Side.

The mayor indicated there could be a property tax increase if more funding is not approved. In the governor's proposed budget, the city stands to get an additional $60 million.

The mayor says that's not enough. He also says there needs to be changes to the way education is funded.

"We fund education through local property taxes. And that is very, very, very unfair because it hurts everyone. It hurts all the renters, all the homeowners, seniors, hurts everyone, not only in the city but in the state of Illinois," said Daley.

The mayor suggested the state could come up with additional funding by leasing assets to private operators like the city is attempting to lease Midway Airport.
