Defense wants gag order on videotaped beating case

  

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police officer Anthony Abbate will appear before a judge Wednesday. His attorney wants a judge to place a gag order on the videotaped beating case.

The defense is concerned about the media coverage surrounding the videotape which has garnered world wide attention. It allegedly shows Abbate kicking and beating bartender Karolina Obrycka in March 2006.

There was hope that a trial could be avoided as the defense and prosecutors tried to hammer out a possible plea deal last month. But both sides could not agree on the punishment.

Abbate is now free on bond.

The Independent Police Review Authority recommended Abbate be fire and new superintendent Jody Weis accepted that recommendation.
