Fight to prevent museum move to Grant Park

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The fight against a plan to move Chicago's Children's Museum to Grant Park is entering a new round. Opponents vow to take legal action.

Despite vocal protest from opponents to the plan, the City Council approved the move Wednesday by a vote of 33-to-16.

Museum officials say they need to move because they've outgrown their space at Navy Pier. But critics argue moving to the north end of Grant Park violates rules on building on public park land.

"I think the responsible move here by this body would be to respect the 172 years of special protection that have protected Grant Park," said Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd Ward.

"This is not personal. It's not personal with them. It is not personal with us. But I have fought for children my entire life, and I will continue to fight for children," said Mayor Daley.

The group "Save Grant Park" and Alderman Reilly plan to seek a temporary restraining order so construction cannot start.
