CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two long-time state officials made a bipartisan call Sunday for a 2010 Constitutional Convention.
Democratic Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn and former Republican Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka urged voters to endorse needed reforms by supporting what is being called 'Con Con' in the November election.
"Funding for education? How are we going to fund transportation in this state? Why don't we have a capital bill? Are we going to combine treasurer and comptroller, which I know has been near and dear to former Treasurer Quinn's and my heart? Why aren't we doing this and saving money?," said Topinka.
"Today, the Chicago Tribune urged voters across Illinois to vote 'yes' for the constitutional convention. This is a once-in-a generation opportunity for the people of Illinois to set the rules for the politicians in Springfield.
Quinn said voters would elect delegates and would have to approve any changes to the state's constitution.
