EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- First it was talking on cell phones, now Chicago drivers face a huge fine if they're caught texting while behind the wheel.
The Chicago City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Wednesday prohibiting drivers from texting and surfing the Internet, except when the vehicle is parked.
Violators would face a $75 fine for each offense or $200 if it results in an accident.
Law enforcement personnel and people who drive emergency vehicles are exempt from the law.
Eight states currently ticket drivers who text while behind the wheel.
