Busy delivery day for postal workers

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Nobody is working harder today than your mail carrier.

Today is one of their busiest days of the year.

Postal carriers have quite a job ahead of them today, one of the busiest postal days of the year and dealing with dangerous weather conditions. It may look like winter wonderland in Niles after Tuesday's snowfall but it makes it difficult for post office carriers to deliver mail and packages.

Luis Casaras has been a postal carrier for ten years and loves his job - even under these conditions.

"It's kind of hard because we get, at this time we get a lot of mail because of the holidays. And plus with the weather condition. It gets a little difficult out here," said Caceras, U.S. postal carrier. "We go through rain, sleet and snow all the time."

Caceras says today it will take him five hours to cover his territory.

"I do my job for the people and take care of my customers," said Caceras.

Mail carrier Tommy Lesniewicz says he is out regardless of the weather conditions and his customers appreciate it.

"He rings the door bell and puts the package inside the screen door so they don't get wet or anything," said Angela Weizkart, Niles resident.

"It is very slippery and that's the most dangerous part of the job right now," said Lesniewicz.

Sidewalks and streets can be treacherous, so it's really up to the residents to make sure that everything is cleared so that the postal carrier can do his or her job and make sure that your mail is delivered on time.

"If it's too dangerous, it's up to us to look at the snow on the ground, the ice and make that choice," said Lesniewicz.

"There's a lot of times where we have to not deliver the -- to the house because of the condition of their steps," said Caceras.

"Keep on waiting. We'll make it sooner or later," said Lesniewicz.

Sidewalks and streets throughout the city are in need of cleaning.
