January 1, 2009 (JOLIET, IL) (WLS) -- Two people have been killed in the crash of a small plane at the Joliet regional airport. It happened around 9:00 pm Thursday.
The single engine Cessna erupted into flames and quickly burned.
One witness describes seeing heavy smoke and several fire trucks and ambulances.
The FAA is joining the NTSB in the investigation. There is no word yet on what caused the crash.
"As far as we know, we had a small plane coming for a landing from the west. And, it looks like it had difficulty. Crashed and burned. Our fire department personnel from Station 7 on the road over here were quick on the scene. As were our police officers, but to no avail, it looks like we have two deceased people in the plane," said Dep. Chief Patrick Kerr of the Joliet Police Department.
It appears, the victims are a male and female, perhaps a couple. "That's correct. No other information available at this point though. We're still trying to investigate, and trying to, to, insure we have the identities of the two victims. But of course, we're not able to give that out at this time," Chief Kerr said.
Joliet Park District executive director Dominic Egizio says the skies were clear over Joliet at the time of the crash. He says the plane was likely a two to four-seater.
