First a hockey game at Wrigley Field, now ice skating for the family. An event at the Friendly Confines Sunday was perhaps a bit too successful.
The Chicago Cubs, the NHL and the Chicago Blackhawks hosted a special community skate day on the same ice rink used for the winter classic at Wrigley Field.
Cub families laced up their skates for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For $10 each person, one could skate for a 45-minute session with proceeds going to Cubs charities.
"It was a once in a lifetime experience. He's pretty fast," Megan McIntyre said referring to her son.
"I told him we're never going to do this again probably and they're just starting out skating so it was a lot of fun. Took a lot of pictures, they're smiling from hear to ear," said Michael Kennedy.
On January 1, the Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings played the first NHL game at Wrigley called the Winter Classic.
"This week has been all about history. The NHL brought the Winter Classic to Wrigley Field and they, along with the Cubs and Blackhawks, decided to keep the rink around for a few days to share with people," said Mike Lufrano of the Chicago Cubs.
Wrigley Field is an institution in Chicago, and some say ice skating under the score board is a must; the most important thing they have done this year. Of course, it was only the fourth day of the new year.
"It was a blast. It was fun. The girls had a great time," said Mary Joe Hayes.
"It was really fun, and I'm planning on doing this again," Dinah Hayes said.
Cubs officials say they would love to have the NHL back again next year at Wrigley Field.
