2 more CPS students die in violence

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Two more Chicago Public School students are the victims of violence. Thirty-nine Chicago Public Schools students have died from violence since September.

The latest victim includes a 16-year-old boy who was shot on Wednesday night near 80th and St. Louis. A 15-year-old boy who was shot on Sunday while playing basketball just a few blocks away at 82nd and Kedvale died on Wednesday night.

Summer break got off to a deadly start for Shawn Wilson and Abraham Tabani. Both were killed this week in separate shootings. Both attended Bogan High School.

Wilson was shot and killed in the Ashburn neighborhood near 80th and St. Louis. It was about 10 on Wednesday night when he was shot in the chest and later died.

"Whoever did this took away a good little boy," said Denise Wilson, victim's cousin.

Police say the shooting is possibly gang-related, but Wilson's family says he was not involved in gangs. Instead, they say Wilson, who was 16, wanted to finish high school and attend college.

"A little boy just growing up on these streets and somebody just took his life too soon...a great little boy," said Wilson.

The other shooting happened Sunday night about 11:40. Officials say Abraham Tabani had been playing basketball outside a neighbor's house when he was gunned down in the Ashburn neighborhood.

Abraham was 15 years old, and just finished his sophomore year at Bogan High School. He died on Wednesday.

"My brother, his death was so innocent, him being so young and him being, basically, stabbed in the back, and shot in his own head. So basically, he died innocent and went straight to heaven," said Wafaa Tabani, Abraham's sister.

Police are investigating both shooting deaths.

No one has been arrested or charged in either case.
