Lawmakers return to work in Springfield Monday afternoon in an attempt to end a budget impasse before Wednesday's deadline.

Members of the Illinois House will meet Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Madigan says lawmakers may vote on a short-term borrowing plan. That would cover the state's pension obligations and help plug the $9 billion budget hole.

The General Assembly needs to reach a budget compromise before the new fiscal year starts Wednesday.
