June 30, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Mayor Richard Daley says Chicago will ask the federal government for money to hire more police officers.
The mayor has requested $106 million to hire 400 officers. Hiring is at a crawl because of the struggling economy.
The officers' union says the number of vacancies could hit 800 this year.
