The 50-cent fuel surcharge for taxicabs in Chicago is going away.

The city's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection says passengers will no longer have to pay the fee starting this Friday.

The 50-cent surcharge is added when gas prices rise above $2.70. When prices stay below that threshold for seven consecutive business days the surcharge is removed.

Passengers who find drivers still charging the fee after Friday are encouraged to call 311.
