Schools warned to prepare for H1N1 flu

August 21, 2009 (WLS) -- State officials are warning schools to prepare for another outbreak of the H1N1 virus.

They're urging schools to enact guidelines now for how they plan to handle problem.

The public health department and the state board of education say schools need to keep track of absences so they can spot signs of an outbreak. They're encouraging schools to isolate students and staff who show signs of the virus and send them home.

"I want to reassure parents, their teachers, and staff and students that the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education are working together with local districts to protect the health of students and staff," said Dr. Damon Arnold, Illinois Department of Public Health.

The board of education says flu vaccinations will be offered at many schools. However, there won't be a formal statewide vaccination program.
