Burglary suspect shot dead by homeowner

  

September 22, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A man Chicago police call a burglary suspect has died after being shot by a homeowner during an apparent break-in.

The attempted burglary and shooting happened late Monday morning in the 7100-block of South Coles in the city's South Shore neighborhood.

Investigators say 45-year-old Maurice Smith, of Chicago, and another unknown suspect were attempting to burglarize a home when the homeowner opened fire and shot Smith.

The other suspect ran away and remains at large.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner.
