4 teens charged in fatal beating
September 28, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A fourth teenager has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the beating death of a Chicago Public Schools student.
Derrion Albert, 16, was killed Thursday.
It's possible more people will be charged in this case.
It's captured national attention as the country follows the story of a Chicago Public Schools student who's life was cut short and the community's effort to stop the violence.
They don't have God in their life. They don't have parents in their life, that's what you get," said Joseph Walker, Derrion Albert's grandfather.
Joseph Walker is still trying to make sense of the violent end to his grandson Derrion Albert's life. It is a death that prosecutors say was at the hands of at least four teenagers; Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene riley, 18, Eric Carson, 16, and Eugene Bailey, 18, who was just charged on Monday night.
Albert was beaten to death last Thursday evening, an innocent bystander caught between two groups of teens feuding over an incident that happened at Fenger High School earlier in the day.
The fight was caught on amateur video tape, reviewed by the police. Click here to watch the video on YouTube
On Monday at Fenger, where Albert was an honor student, his classmates wrote tributes to him on posters and filed into the school which had a strong police presence.
Valerie Jackson escorted her son to school, concerned about his safety because she says he had been jumped before.
"I didn't want him to come to school today but I figure, the school was gonna be beefed up withpolice and why stop his education so I brought him to school and I picked him up and that's gonna happen for a while," said Jackson.
Clergy and community activists held a vigil at the site of Albert's beating on Monday afternoon where they prayed and sought answers for how to stop the violence. Both parents and children were called on to help.
"They know what's going on in these schools. they know what's going on in these streets. had it not been for this video camera, these young people would not have been caught," said Annette Holt, mother of murdered Julian High School student Blair Holt.
Relatives of one of the suspects say that Eugene Bailey was not involved in the fight and that his arrest is a case of mistaken identity.
"He wasn't there and he's charged, but you have people on camera that you can walk right up to them and ask them all the questions you want to," said Desiya Bacon, suspect's aunt.
Suspects Shannon, Carson and Riley appeared in court Monday where they were ordered held without bond. Bailey will appear in court on Tuesday.
Derrion Albert's family is finalizing plans for his funeral which will take place this Saturday.
