October 23, 2009 (ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.) (WLS) -- An Arlington Heights man is accused of stabbing his 86-year-old grandmother 16 times.
Daniel Levine, 24, was charged Friday with attempted murder and aggravated battery. Prosecutors say he wanted to kill his grandmother because she belittled him and didn't show him respect. They also say Levine had been smoking crack cocaine before the attack.
Levine is being held on a $2 million bond. The woman is hospitalized in stable condition.
During an interview with police, the offender reportedly admitted that he stabbed his grandmother with the intention of causing her death.
Police and fire crews responded to a 911 call in the 3000-block of North Carriageway Drive Thursday, shortly before 5 p.m., a police news release said. Authorities say the caller reported that a senior citizen was bleeding and in need of immediate medical assistance.
According to the release, Arlington Heights paramedics treated the victim at the scene and transported her to Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge for treatment of traumatic injuries.
Police say officers at the scene interviewed a witness and learned the offender fled prior to their arrival.
Arlington Heights officers, assisted by the Buffalo Grove police, spread throughout the neighborhood in search of the offender. A police dog began tracking his movement through the area and flushed the suspect from a hiding spot, causing him to run. Officers converged on the area and apprehended the suspect without further resistance, the release said.
Authorities say the suspect was taken into custody and was interviewed by investigators, with the assistance of the Cook County States Attorney's Office.
According to the release, numerous statements were taken from various witnesses, including several individuals who had some personal contact with the suspect throughout the day.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office has approved the charges against Levine.
