AARP, others rally against ComEd rate hike request

March 28, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- AARP Illinois and other groups are rallying against ComEd's request for a rate increase.

A crowd of people, including members of Trinity United Church of Christ, gathered across the street from the South Side church Monday.

AARP and others are urging ComEd customers to contact their lawmakers and the Illinois Commerce Commission, asking them to turn down the utility's request.

"ComEd's has asked the Illinois Commerce Commission for two rate increases worth nearly $600 million," said Bob Gallo, senior state director, AARP Illinois. "This means a huge impact on people's wallets at a time when millions are struggling to find jobs, afford healthcare or groceries or other pay bills. It's the wrong thing to ask for at the worst possible time."

ComEd has said it needs the rate hike as reimbursement for $2 billion that it spent to maintain its electrical distribution system.
