Prosecution rests in Rana terror trial

June 6, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- On Monday morning, jurors saw the videotaped interrogation of Chicago businessman Tahawwur Rana, who is accused of working with al Qaeda.

Roughly 18 minutes of the video was played in court at the federal terror trial. Rana was questioned for almost six hours after his arrest on October 18, 2009. He had waived his Miranda Rights.

Rana spoke quietly and calmly to the FBI and without his attorney present. On the tape, Rana has dark brown hair. Two years later, his hair and beard are both white. U.S. v. Rana trial exhibits

Some of the questioning involves Rana's ties to David Coleman Headley, Rana's childhood friend and an admitted terrorist who testified last week in the trial. Headley testified about Rana's role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack and an attack plan on a Denmark newspaper that published a 2005 cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, which is an offensive gesture to Muslims. Rana is accused of cooperating in the attacks by letting Headley pose as a business associate.

On Monday, the judge discussed the possilbility of removing the name Ilyas Kashmiri, al-Qaeda's military operations chief in Pakistan, from the court documents. Kashmiri, one of six charged in absentia in the Rana trial, is believed to have been killed in a drone attack on Friday. The U.S. has not confirmed Kashmiri's death.
