North Chicago names interim police chief

February 6, 2012 (NORTH CHICAGO, Ill.) (WLS) -- North Chicago has a new interim police chief, and he's a veteran of the Chicago Police Department.

The city council selected James Jackson, who was once an assistant superintendent of operations for the CPD.

Jackson replaces police chief Mike Newsome, who's on administrative leave while more than 80 complaints of excessive force are being investigated.

Paul Smith, who attended Monday night's meeting, says he was roughed up by police officers last year.

"He never read me my rights or nothing," Smith said. They ended up, I guess, choking me, grabbed me, smashed my head into the wall. Since then I've had severe headaches. My sight is going bad."

The police brutality allegations began after the death of Darrin Hanna last November.

He died days after officers used a stun gun on him during an arrest.
