7 dead, several wounded in shootings
March 18, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- It was a violent weekend across the Chicago area with seven people dead and dozens wounded in shootings throughout the city.
Among the victims was a 6-year-old girl killed in a drive-by shooting in Little Village Saturday.
On Sunday, relatives and neighbors of Aliyah Shell came together to comfort one another.
She was shot dead as she played on the front porch of her home.
Detectives said they recovered what is believed to be the gun used in the crime.
Juan Barraza, 18, was charged Sunday with murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. A second attacker, a 16-year-old boy, faces the same charges. Both were due in court Monday.
Police say the two suspects are known gang members who might have been targeting a rival near the girl's house.
The shootings happened between Friday and Sunday morning, many of them in communities on the city's South Side. Besides the dead, more than 30 others were wounded in shootings, according to the Sun-Times.
Among the latest was a mother and 1-year-old child shot on Chicago's South Side Sunday afternoon.
Police said the woman and child, shot around 79th and Maryland, suffered graze wounds.
"You can't lose another child to gun violence," said community activist Andrew Holmes. "If they stay silent this will continue to happen."
Holmes said residents must speak up and give police information. Holmes, often, spends his weekends at crime scenes. He attributes much of the violence to gang activity involving retaliation.
"Retaliation needs to be left in the hands of the Chicago PD," Holmes said. "(It's) all we need."
But not all of this weekend's gun violence was due to gangs. Of the dozens of shootings and murders, some involved domestic disputes.
On the city's North Side Saturday, a 28-yaer-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the face after someone fired shots at her as she opened her apartment door. Investigators are trying to determine if the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute.
This weekend's fatal shootings include 36-year-old Bert Lindsey. He was at a friend's backyard party early Sunday when someone drove by and opened fire.
On Sunday afternoon, Lindsey wass being remembered by family and friends as a devoted husband and father as they pleaded for the violence to end.
"It's like senseless," said Lindsey's cousin, Marshaun White. "It doesn't make any sense. It doesn't make any sense at all. I don't know what to say. It happens too much.
The dead also include:
