Taxpayers paid millions for Burge trials

March 28, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Chicago has a clearer idea of what the Jon Burge torture scandal cost its taxpayers.

Burge was sentenced last year to four and a half years in prison for lying about the torture and abuse of criminal suspects. The former Chicago Police lieutenant and the men working under him have been accused of torturing suspects for years.

Figures just released by the city show that since 1988, it has cost more than $13 million to defend Burge and the city in civil cases. It has also cost about $1.3 million to represent the city in related investigations and court cases making the total rise to more than $14.6 million.

Settlements and judgments paid by the city in Burge-related civil cases now total more than $22 million.
