Chicago school board approves calendar changes

March 28, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The Chicago Board of Education approved several changes to the calendar for the next school year.

School officials say students will be in class 10 additional days for a total of 180. The number of holidays will be reduced. Students will attend school on Columbus and Pulaski days. And children will also be in class next year on report card pick-up days.

There was a protest before the meeting by parents and activists who oppose a longer school day. Some also called for a board that is elected and not appointed.
