April 30, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- One person is dead and a Chicago police officer is injured after a shootout with robbery suspects in the Little Village neighborhood near 25th and Western.
A police officer was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition after being hit by a getaway car at 2:30 a.m. Monday, police say.
Police responded to a robbery of an electronics store. Police say they told the three unarmed suspects to come out with their hands up. Instead, authorities say, the men drove out of the store area with the storeowner's car, striking an officer on foot and hitting a police squad car. Police fired, killing one suspect and injuring two others. Those two suspects have been taken to area hospitals in serious condition.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
"In the process of coming out of the building, the vehicle did ram into a squad car, and again, you have officers that have surrounded the building. The officers were out there responding to the burglary in progress. It was ample opportunity for the bad guys to give it up. They decided to fight rather than give it up," said Pat Camden, Fraternal Order of Police.
