Mayor Emanuel, survivors mark Holocaust Remembrance Day

May 4, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Dignitaries, students and survivors gathered at the Illinois Holocaust Museum for Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined students and survivors for the event. They heard the story of a woman who was a teenager when she was sent to a concentration camp and her family was killed.

Mayor Emanuel spoke about the importance of teaching students to stand up for what's right.

"You look back at this moment in time in history, the darkest moment of the 20th century in my view, what it would have been like to have people and whether they're individuals, but nations that finally spoke truth to power and defeated Nazism," said Emanuel.

The remembrance concluded with a ceremonial candle lighting ceremony in memory of the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust.
