Grid garbage pickup begins next month on North Side

  

May 10, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The city of Chicago will begin its grid garbage collection system next month in seven North Side wards.

The goal is to increase efficiency and save the city millions of dollars.

Right now, trash collection routes are not linear. The city says that wastes a lot of time and fuel.

The new system will begin June 11th in wards 40, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, and part of Ward 44. City officials say the plan will concentrate sanitation workers in targeted areas each day and save a lot of money.

"Well, obviously we have to go through all of this to get the true savings. They're saying somewhere between 20 million and plus once we go through this process," Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Thomas Byrne said.

Residents in affected areas will receive notification on their garbage cart the week of June 4th.
