F-16s fly over Chicago in summit defense drill

May 18, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Air Force F-16 jets and other military aircraft flew over the downtown area Friday morning to prepare securing the NATO summit.

The air defense exercise was conducted by the North American Aerospace Defense Command. During the summit, Air Force fighter jets will be on alert to enforce the Federal Aviation Administration's temporary flight restriction zone.

A NORAD statement released Thursday said the drill would include F-16s and a Coast Guard search-and-rescue helicopter called an HH-65 Dolphin. There will also be an Air National Guard C-21 aircraft, used for cargo and passenger airlift.

Friday's drill is in coordination with the U.S. Secret Service, which has overall responsibility for summit security.
