Kittens, puppies looking for homes in Chicago

June 8, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Are you looking for a feline friend or cuddly pup? An adoption event this weekend in Chicago could be your chance to take a pet off the streets.

Humans are not the only ones being impacted by a tough economy, according to PAWS Chicago. The humane organization says cats and dogs are being turned into shelters in alarming numbers. In an effort to encourage residents to take in Chicago's homeless pets, PAWS is hosting a 36-hour adopt-a-thon.

More than 120 puppies, kittens, cats and dogs will be available for adoption starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 8 until Saturday, June 9 at 11 p.m.

Potential pet owners started getting in line early Friday at PAWS to get a head start on finding the pet of their choice.

Delores Johnson of South Holland fell in love with Amanda, a Great Pyranese mix.

"I put my dog down," said Johnson. "I did not want another, but the house is not the same without a dog."

Paws helps those interested in adopting a pet meet their perfect match.

"I made a promise to them, if they got good grades and picked up after themselves, I would get them a dog," said Rafael Aiaiza, father.

"I am getting a dog. I have never had one before," said Emily Aiaiza, daughter.

"It is so fun to have a dog," said Andrea Aiaiza, daughter.

Some found just what they were looking for to be a part of their family.

"We found a pet, and so we are going to take it home with us," said John Julitz.
