Boy, 13, among those killed in weekend shootings

June 24, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- It has been another violent weekend in Chicago, marked by numerous shootings -- two of which killed a man and a 13-year-old boy.

Other teenagers were wounded in shootings, as well.

The man, 29, was shot and killed early Sunday on the city's Northwest Side.

The 13-year-old boy also was shot early Sunday, at approximately 1:30 a.m., in the 6200-block of South Rhodes. He was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In another incident in the 2400-block of East 74th Street, police say two boys, ages 14 and 15, were shot while playing basketball at approximately 8:45 p.m. Saturday. A gunman reportedly approached the boys, opened fire, then took off. One of the boys was shot in the leg; the other was shot in the back and shoulder. They were both in stable condition at the hospital later Sunday morning.

Ironically, the latest violence coincides with the city's annual gun turn-in program Saturday, which brought in the highest number of guns since 2007: 5,500 guns.

"We're really up against an overwhelming ocean of firearms," said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy. "No doubt this stuff contributes to preventing violence from happening in our streets."

The weapons turned in included real guns, replicas and BB guns.

"Whoever is doing the killings, there is another way," said Shelton Davis, who lost a son to gun violence.

Although, no one was in police custody for the shooting of the 13-year-old boy, authorities said they did have a suspect in custody in the shooting that killed the 29-year-old man.
